Coming-Out Movement
Posted On 07/29/2010 18:22:15 by akwilt13

This site is great!  I wanted to let you know about my own coming-out movement: I Am 1 in a Million.  Because coming out can be difficult, participants join the movement anonymously, and their identities are only revealed after membership has reached 1,000,000 members--one million people will reveal that they have mental illnesses at the same time.

The purposes of the campaign are to help people feel comfortable enough to get treatment, to dispel common myths about people with mental illnesses, and create a powerful community that can stand up to discrimination and harassment.

About 30 million people in the US with mental disorders do not receive treatment, and one of the main reasons is that they are too afraid or embarrassed to ask.  Sometimes, the lack of treatment results in a suicide that could have been prevented.  Showing people that it’s OK to talk about depression and get treatment will save lives.

In 1994 when I first sought help, I called to get into our county's mental health office. I guess it must have been a bad day for the lady on the phone, because one of her first questions to me was "well, what are you doing to help yourself???"!

Uhhhh, I felt like she needed the help more than I did, so I hung up. It was another few months before I was strong enough to call and try again, but I did.

sroth313: I'm sorry your experience with the site was not good.  I hope I can help...

I'm not sure from what you wrote whether you were actually signed up.  You can check if you were added by going to the campaign's site on The Point.  It looks like you might not have been added, because there hasn't been any recent activity, which means that there might be something wrong with the widget that I will have to try to fix.

On the other hand if you were signed up, but wanted something more to happen after you joined, you could also visit the campaign's site on The Point, to see announcements, a list of others who have joined, and campaign progress.  If you have suggestions about other things that could happen when someone joins, let me know.

Thanks for your interest!

I went to the site. I signed up.. Put my email in and then it went no where.. How helpful is that? It looked like it was only interested in getting the amount of people only..Then I went to inquire about the site and read that there is only one person to answer email and you had to have it relate to 3 topics that weren't related to the questions about the site.

Most people think that asking for help is a sign of weakness - I don't agree - it takes great courage to ask for help. Whoever started the myth of self sufficientcy was an A-hole.
