VARIOUS SUMMER '08 MOVIES - See Below

"Step Brothers" is a comedy that tries to be bad and annoying and succeeds.  The characters often yell obscenities at each other loudly and there is no coherence.  The few laughs come about in a frenzied way.

"Wall-E" is a wonderful space opera that plays like a silent film.  The movie has an epic scope as it follows a clean-up robot in the future and it works its way into your heart.

In "Wanted" there is enough kinetic excitement to make it an effective action movie.  The way the camera shows bullets finding their destination is imaginative.

"The Incredible Hulk" is louder and shallower than its predecessor.  It is a colorful movie but doesn't offer much in the way of drama or emotional complexity.

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" is a sequel that is as enjoyable as the first movie.  The stylized sets and visuals are bizarre and have a surreal quality to them.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is a worthy installment in the series.  The film's imaginative visuals redeem moments of farce and make this a rousing adventure.

"Iron Man" is dazzling and seems to get better as it goes along.  The film looks like a comic book with a rigid villain and stylish special effects.

"The X-Files: I Want to Believe" is an intriguing puzzle.

"The Dark Knight" is the best film I've seen so far this year.  The film has excellent writing and cinematography.  Heath Ledger's performance is a masterpiece and so is the movie.

Well that does it for my capsule reviews for the summer.  When I get back from the Telluride Film Festival, I will send more reviews.  I usually see about ten good to great art films there and the event is a blast.
