Mental illness is NO DIFFERENT than any other ICD-9 diagnosis in that it involves an organ, system, etc. In us it's just the brain. Five years ago, when I was 45, I was a passenger in a thre... Read More

Today’s topic is Mental Illness! And what do we think of when we hear the words Mental Illness?

Usually something like our buddy Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter from the forthcoming Disney remake of Alice In Wonderland. We think of mental illness as something scary, creepy and bad.

So what do we always do when it comes to things that sound bad? We change it around to... Read More

"In the medical model, you take a person with a mental illness, you provide treatment in the hopes of reducing symptoms, and then they're supposed to approximate some notion of normality. Our research shows the opposite. You take a person with a mental illness, you then reduce the discrimination and Stigma against them, increase their social roles and participation, which provides them a reason to get better in the first place, and then you provide treatment and support. The issue is n... Read More
